Anuradhapura — a historic centre of healing
The Anuradhapura period (c. 377 BCE – 1017 CE) established some of the world's earliest hospital systems. King Buddhadasa, the physician-king, performed complex surgeries and cared for humans and animals alike. The ancient hospital at Mihintale (9th century AD) — with stone medicinal troughs (Beheth Oruwa) for herbal oil baths — remains one of the oldest systematic medical institutions ever discovered.
Traditional Sinhala medicine restores the body's natural state through Pathya (recommended diet), avoiding Apathya (harmful foods and habits), and mental well-being — offering a peaceful, chemical-free path to healing.
